Iowa offers credit for more than 30 Advanced Placement (AP) Program exams. You can earn 3 to 8 semester hours of credit per test, depending on the subject and your score. For additional information, please visit the University of Iowa's Advanced Placement Program.

Physics 1: Algebra-Based

Students achieving a test score of 4 or 5 are given 4 s.h. and credit for PHYS:1511 - College Physics I. This credit may be applied to General Education Program: Natural Sciences hours (as a lab course); or used as elective hours.

Physics 2: Algebra-Based

Students achieving a test score of 4 or 5 are given 4 s.h. and credit for PHYS:1512 - College Physics II. This credit may be applied to General Education Program: Natural Sciences hours (as a lab course); or used as elective hours.

Physics C (Mechanics)

Students achieving a test score of 4 or 5 are given 4 s.h. and credit for PHYS:1611 - College Physics I. This credit may be applied to General Education Program: Natural Sciences hours (as a lab course); or used as elective hours.

Physics C (Electricity and Magnetism)

Students achieving a test score of 4 or 5 are given 4 s.h. and credit for PHYS:1612 - Introductory Physics II. This credit may be applied to General Education Program: Natural Sciences hours (as a lab course); or used as elective hours.

NOTES: 

  • A maximum of 8 s.h. of credit may be earned through any combination of Physics exams.
  • An incoming physics major who has scored a 4 or 5 on both the Mechanics and Electricity & Magnetism exams may choose to bypass PHYS:1701 and PHYS:1702 (Physics I & II) and begin their required major courses with PHYS:2703 (Physics III).
