Congratulations to Kamuran Dilsiz for successfully defending his PhD dissertation on "Cross Section Measurement of Simultaneously Produced Upsilon and J/Psi Mesons and Upgrade Studies for the CMS Detector."

"The thesis reports the observation of a rarely-occurring process, using the proton-proton collision data produced by the CERN Large Hadron Collider and recorded by the Compact Muon Solenoid detector. The production of two particles in the same proton-proton collision can be explained by a variety of possible mechanisms, and the observation of the process and measurement of the rate is the first step in understanding the underlying mechanism and providing input to quarkonium models. The simultaneous production of Upsilon and J/Psi mesons decaying to muons gives a distinctive four-muon signature, allowing the observation of this rare process. Additionally, the upgrade of the silicon tracker for CMS is discussed."
