Professor Yasar Onel has received a research award from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for his project, "Development of Secondary Emission Calorimetry." The award will support the development of a first-of-its-kind secondary emission calorimeter that combines ultra-fast timing, high precision, and exceptional radiation resistance for applications in particle physics and advanced medical imaging. Building on a successful prototype, the project aims to create a highly segmented detector capable of operating in extreme radiation environments while requiring minimal power and maintenance. The research has the potential to advance next-generation collider experiments and innovative radiation detection technologies, positioning the University at the forefront of detector instrumentation and high-energy physics research.
