The Department of Physics and Astronomy hosted the third annual Acevedo Poster Contest on Feb. 27, giving participating students a chance to show how they used computing resources, tools, or techniques in their research.

The contest is sponsored by alumna Amanda Acevedo (BS Physics, Computer Science '96), president of Vedo Systems, a software engineering and consulting firm in Houston, Texas.

Four winners will each receive a $100 prize. Graduate winners:

  • John Momberg (Advisor Ken Gayley) – "An Interactive Visualization Tool for Teaching Stellar Evolution."
  • Eudes Gomes da Silva (Advisor Denis Candido) – "Interfacing spin centers in hBN with magnon modes in permalloy."

Undergraduate winners:

  • Minou Emmad (Advisor John Prineas) – "FDTD Simulation-Driven Design of Dielectric Metasurfaces for Next-Generation Telecom Photodetectors."
  • Alexi Michanicou (Advisor Allison Jaynes) – "Extracting Luminosity Metrics from Pulsating Aurora."

Undergrads presenting posters included: Minou Emmad, Augustin Heitman, Arrissa Khan, Dov Kurtis, Alexi Michanicou, Grace Paxton, Yatharth Sirohi, Nikolas Vinovich, and Luke Thompson.

Grad students presenting posters were: Laksha Das, Ryan Dunn, Eudes Gomes da Silva, Joel Choi, Jacob Payne, John Momberg, and Aditya Venkatesh.
