Congratulations to Stephen Kaeppler for successfully defending his PhD dissertation on "A Rocket-Bourne Investigation of Auroral Electrodynamics within the Auroral-Ionosphere."

"This is a study of experimental data from a pair of sounding rockets flown from Alaska that investigated the electrodynamics of how auroral currents flow across magnetic field lines in the lower ionosphere. The work discusses the various experimental techniques used and the data analysis of the relevant physical parameters. In particular the magnetic field data is used to derive the currents and these are compared with particle precipitation with good agreement. In addition a model is presented which calculates the effect of precipitating electrons on enhancing ionospheric conductivity."
