Big Science, Small Packages: An Overview of Small Satellites and Their Applications

Dr. Laurel O'Neill

Abstract: Since the introduction of the CubeSat standard in 1999, thousands of CubeSats have been launched. This includes over 200 satellites in 2026 alone. What initially started as a low-cost tool for space education, has rapidly become an option for scientific investigations ranging from Earth observation to astronomy. In this presentation, Dr. ONeill will present a selection of CubeSats and their scientific missions. Moving on from a broad overview of missions, they will discuss the BlackCAT CubeSat out of Penn State and its early results. This talk will close with a discussion of future mission concepts that utilize small spacecraft such as CubeSats and PocketQubes.
