Departmental/Student Lounge

  • A lounge for Physics and Astronomy students is located on the third floor of Van Allen Hall. Additionally, the Van Allen Commons on the third floor is an open study space for students to study and work in groups.


  • The Physics and Astronomy library collection is part of the Sciences Library, 120 Iowa Avenue, a short walk from Van Allen Hall. A large portion of the journal collection is available online, as are many e-books.


  • Several computer laboratories in Van Allen Hall
  • 29 other computing centers on campus


  • Two optical telescopes and a radio telescope on the roof of Van Allen Hall
  • A fully automated telescope in Arizona for undergraduate classwork and research -- The department operates a robotic telescope facility at the Iowa Robotic Telescope Facilities in southern Arizona at astro.physics.uiowa.edu, which has options for remote observing using web-based forms. High school students are encouraged to access this site.
