“Plasma Physics Aspects of HII Regions in the Interstellar Medium” by Professor Steven Spangler, Department of Physics & Astronomy, The University of Iowa
Abstract: HII regions are photoionized plasmas in the interstellar medium. Some diagnostics, such as of density or electron temperature, can be done well through standard astronomical observations. Others, such as the properties of the magnetic field and properties of plasma turbulence, are much more difficult. I will discuss some recent work I have carried out in collaboration with graduate students Allison Costa and Brandon Bergerud relating to the compression of the magnetic field in HII region, magnetic field fluctuations, and plasma density fluctuations.
