"Energetic Solar Proton Access to the Inner Magnetosphere"
Abstract: In this talk I’ll discuss my work with Van Allen Probes examining solar proton access into the near-equatorial inner magnetosphere. Solar protons, originating from energetic particles events on the sun (such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections), can access the magnetosphere through magnetic field lines open to the solar wind or by transport across magnetic field lines. I examined 4 strong solar energetic particle events over the Van Allen Probes mission. Using the proton energy, direction of arrival, and spacecraft location I measure the cutoff location and energy for solar energetic protons. Results indicate the cutoff rigidities are highly dynamic in their response to both solar wind and magnetospheric conditions.
