Amit Kumar Mukhopadhyay

Congratulations to Amit Kumar Mukhopadhyay for successfully defending his PhD dissertation on "Statistics for Motion of Microparticles in a Plasma."

"Amit performed experiments and simulations to study the motion of electrically charged microspheres immersed in a plasma. He was the first experimenter in plasma physics to report a measurement of a two-particle distribution function and a two-particle correlation function. These functions had long been used in the statistical theory of plasmas. No way to measure them was found until Amit performed his experiments with just two microparticles, which he tracked using video microscopy. He also analyzed data from a dusty plasma experiment that was performed in the International Space Station to detect a non-Gaussian velocity distribution, which is a signature of a driven system."
