Congratulations to Ran Lin for successfully defending his PhD dissertation on "Organic Spintronic Devices Utilizing Spin-Injection, Spin-Tunneling and Spin-Dependent Transport."
"Dr. Ran Lin’s work is in the field of organic spintronics. Spintronics studies how the electron spin can be utilized in electronic devices. Giant magnetoresistance (GMR), which is a well-known example of a spintronic effect, is used in hard disk drives. The discoverers of GMR received the 2007 Nobel Prize in physics. The idea to use organic materials in spintronics is relatively new. There still exist basic questions regarding how to properly interpret the experiments, what particular materials give the best performance, and how defects affect device performance. Dr. Lin made important contributions to answer these three questions."
